Contributors to the Invention of the Digital Computer and...
During the mid-twentieth century many inventions were created in America. The 1900s included important inventions such as the airplane and telephone. Along with this time of innovation and invention came World War II, a large impetus to create something new. The digital computer was just one of these many inventions. The digital computer was invented in around 1940, right within the World War II time period. George Stibitz was recognized as the father of the invention although there were many steps leading up to the digital computer. As a few of the many features, the digital computerââ¬â¢s ability to do multiple functions and to have greater programmability put it ahead of its predecessors. World War II was just another incentive to improve the computer, allowing for faster operations and more effective cryptanalysis. The results were tallied from surveys sent to all of the companies in the FORTUNE 1,000, plus the 200 largest privately held firms in the country; 148 responded (Chen and Hickman, 2000). The survey was based on minorities in the workforce and the companys ability to successfully integrate diversity into their program.Fifteen different categories were analyzed, ranging from, the amount of minority positions held at all levels of the company, to the t urnover and retention ratio opposed to that of whites. Forty seven percent of minorities made-up Sempras employee base, while 28 percent hold top positions. They also purchase much of their goods and services from minority suppliers, whereupon, those funds are circulated within the community, enhancing the quality of life and economy throughout (Chen and Hickman, 2000).Sempra Energy also established an Office of Corporate Diversity Affairs that manages employee diversity at the company and has a dedicated team that manages supplier diversity.They are responsible for ensuring equality in every aspect of the corporations operational elements. This includes, employees, vendors, partners, customers and community out reach programs. Companies, like Sempra, who interact with the public, have discovered the importance of having the makeup of their workforces replicate the makeup of their customer base. The range of talent, experience, knowledge, insight, and perspective available measures their capacity to evolve as a diverse entity. It is clear that companies, like Sempra, that diversify their workforces will have a distinct competitive advantage over those that dont. Companies that will experience the greatest benefits of workforce diversity, will employ people because of their distinct differences and perspectives, and not because they have to meet a quota. Cultural diversity can either be dealt with negatively and successfully. The need to embrace cultural diversity is evident; to stay and remain competitive in todays global market. Cultural diversity is embraced by valuing cultural diversity in the workforce, identifying who their customers are, knowing what they want, and empowering and valuing the employee. As a result of the tremendous advancement in technology and communication, todays corporations have come to embrace change and diversity in business strategies and most importantly, in their interpersonal skills with its cultural diversified employees. Customers are no longer seen as one particular culture and from one particular country. Advancements in communication have enabled faster and easier accessibility to the global market through the use of e-mail, cell phones, and fax machines and the Internet. Without understanding the need to embrace cultural diversity, an organization would experience negative returns on their investments. Some of the aspects that would negatively affect the organization would be low employee moral and satisfaction resulting from feeling disregarded or left out, time wasted when conflicts and misunderstandings arise, and capital resources allocated on legal fees and settlements. Fortunately, todays business organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of a more inclusive and equitable work environment as their bottom line. When describing the need and path that business organizations require to stay competitive and successful in their local and global markets, cultural diversity will always require attention. Business organizations will not only understand and respond to the needs of its customers, but it will also ensure its survival and productive workforce.
